*****One of my colleagues wrote the below some years ago:
Elite athletes need a Functional & Systems approach to their
training. This is agreed to be a type of periodisation but very
individualistic. Large swings in the type, volume & intensity should
not be advised e.g. Applying a hypertrophy phase on an elite athlete
would have to be extremely well planned as that athlete could end up
having their training adversley affected for up to three months.
Conventional training/planning uses Stimulation, Retaining &
Detraining.
Elite athletes need shorter stimulation & retaining so that
detraining doesn't enter into the equation. This means sequential or
even simultaneous development of specific motor factors with frequent
intermittent changes or challenges inside their training regimes or
targets
An elite athlete should always be in such a form that they are able
to approach their top form within two to three months (Bondarchuck
track technique 102). As far back as 1965 Matveyev himself realised
that "the relationship between phases of sporting form and periods of
training must not be ignored, as they will interupt the normal course
of improvement" What he means is don't move too far from the product
you are after.
This cannot be achieved by the sequential training under the basic
periodisation system, as in some observed schedules for emerging
athletes this takes six to eight months!!. For the elite athlete it
needs to be approached with frequent intermittent changes in training
targets whilst retaining non targeted motor abilities using retaining
loads. With this method you will be able to sequentially develop
specific motor abilities. (Zatsiorsky '95) This functional training
is a complete system of athletic development that focuses on training
the body the way it will be used in competition, thus making it more
efficient than the standard model. It can still be classed as
periodisation and is the evolution of the Matveyev system
It is recognised that elite athletes generally fall into one of three
main training and response types. Once this is identified you can
match your athletes training to the short & long time adaptations
which allow the athlete to progress & peak at the correct time.
Bompa '95 shows how to use a power dominant programme for four and a
half months whilst maintaining form.
This shows how to plan the dynamics of performance over periods of
retention of form, taking into account the individual reaction of the
elite athlete to the change in training methods that will be needed
at the start of the competitive periods.
By understanding how your athlete responds to periods of development,
retention and/or a loss of form, you will be able to augment the
existing periodisation of training with a more functional and
personal theory and practice taking into account the individual
characteristics of your athletes development. (see A.P. Bondachuk,
1978-1985), the presence of "varying" (A.N. Vorobyov, 1977)
and "stable" (Bondarchuk, 1978-1985) means of distributing the volume
and intensity of training load as well as the "alternating" (N.G.
Ozolin, 1960; L. P. Matveyev, 1964-1978; Yu.V. Verkhoshansky, 1985,
et al) and the "simultaneous" (Bondarchuk, 1978) use of means of
general and special preparation for the duration of the preparatory
periods and the periods of form development, etc.
