Gonna give an off the wall suggestion. We are Thousand Trails (TT)
members. They are always looking for new members and have a program
under which you can stay at one of their campgrounds for 2 or 3 nites,
without charge, but must attend a sales pitch. (Absolutely, under no
circumstances, buy anything they pitch, no matter how good it sounds.
You need to get some experience in RVing before even thinking of that
kind of commitment.) You can call them, 800 205 0606. Better would be to
go to the Camping World (a goody store that you will learn about as an
RVer) in San Bernardino where they will probably have a TT booth. See
what locations TT offers. I'd suggest Pio Pico which is about 15 miles
east of San Diego. (Oakzanita would be even better being in a very
wooded area, but believe they are still cut back because of a fire.)
There is another, much closer to you, Wilderness Lakes (just east of Sun
City), but don't think it would be good for your purpose. Anyway, if you
choose this route, I think you'll enjoy the campground and most are
situated in places that you hike or enjoy whatever.
