Paul & Brenda, you are sooo correct. We did not know that you can negotiate
for an extended warranty price the same way you negotiate for a vehicle
price. When we first bought our hybrid Prius (Dec. 2002), we decided that
since the technology was new that we should have an extended warranty. We
took it there in the sales office, no questions asked. It cost us $1295.
When we got home, I got on my Toyota-Prius discussion group and began to ask
questions. I learned that there was only ONE extended warranty that covered
a Prius, and that was the Platinum. I also learned that others paid $980 for
theirs. Another thing I found out was that an extended warranty can be
purchased any time within the factory warranty period -- we didn't HAVE to
purchase it before we drove it off the lot -- as long as the vehicle has not
needed any repairs.
I don't know if extended warranties for other vehicles (motorhomes) have the
same rules applied, but I would think they are similar.
One other note.....when our insurance policy arrived, I read the fine print.
In Texas, when you purchase such policies, you have 20 days (could be 10)
from the time you receive the policy to cancel (in writing) and get a full
refund if the policy has not been used. I did that and we got the full $1295
back. In the meantime, I called a dealer in a nearby town and told them I
wanted the Platinum policy for $980. They said they couldn't do that, so I
said I was sorry, but I would have to go online to purchase at that price.
They then agreed to sell it to me for $980. When the policy arrived, it was
a RED (not Platinum) policy, their regular $980 policy. Of course, the RED
wouldn't cover the Prius and was not bumper to bumper as the Platinum was.
I called them back and followed up with a letter of complaint. We got our
Platinum policy for $980.
Sometimes you just have to negotiate (we've learned).
